A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed pending a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
