The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a significant prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a demand for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
